History

The Department of Genome Sciences was created in September 2001 by a merger of the former Departments of Genetics and Molecular Biotechnology. A history of the Department of Genome Sciences is available here.

Please follow this link to read about the former Department of Genetics.

For an excellent account of the origins of the Department of Genetics, please see "Herschel Roman and 50 Years of Genetics at the University of Washington", presented at the department seminar on December 14, 1992 by Dr. David Stadler.

"Stan Gartler: A Scientific Appreciation" lecture by Dr. Maynard Olson is available via the UW Medical Genetics website.
