Steps to hire student employees (the below process is for non-genome sciences majors only; please contact Brian Giebel if the student is a Genome Sciences major):

  1. Contact HR Manager to discuss the process.

  2. Please fill out a Student Employee Position Information form and return to HR manager.

  3. If you are hiring an hourly student assistant or work study student and you already know who you want to hire, we are not required to conduct an open recruitment. Simply fill out what the Student Employee Position Information form and return it to HR manager for further processing.

  4. If you are hiring for a student position covered by the UAW Union contract with benefits and tuition waiver, the position may be required to be posted as a competitive recruitment. To view which positions are covered by the UAW contact, please see Article 14 regarding job titles and classifications.
Frequently Asked Questions related to the UAW Union contract

  5. Once the job description has been approved by both the hiring manager and HR, the position will be posted by HR to the target audience for a minimum of one week (5 business days) via HuskyJobs (student position database) and the Genome Science website. During the time posted, HR will collect the application materials and correspond with all applicants regarding the position.

  6. Once the position closes, HR will send the applications to the hiring manager for review via a shared folder on google docs.

  7. The hiring manager will review the applications and tell HR who is to be interviewed and who the final candidate will be. HR will notify all applicants of their application status within two weeks of the closing date of the opening, unless otherwise noted in the job posting.

  8. HR will draft contract letters for all union covered positions for signature by the hiring manager or principle investigator. Hourly student assistant positions do not require contract letters.

  9. HR will contact the final candidate for further new hire processing.

  10. If at any time you have questions regarding the above noted steps to hire a student, please do not hesitate to contact HR manager for assistance.
