Departmental statement about the events in Georgia:
Dear Genome Sciences community,
We were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic events in Georgia earlier this week. We condemn this horrific act of violence that took the lives of eight persons, including six women of Asian descent. Sadly, this event is one of many acts of hate, including locally, that have specifically targeted Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities and that have increased in numbers over the past year.
We recognize the pain, stress, frustration, and fear that members of our community are feeling, and we stand in steadfast solidarity with our Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander colleagues. We reiterate that, as a Department, we are committed to combating white supremacy and anti-Asian racism.
If you witness or experience anti-Asian racism, please report it here:
- The Seattle Office for Civil Rights
- The Coronavirus Anti-AAPI Racism Incident Report
- UW's bias incident reporting tool
We want to highlight that support resources are available both within our department (please email serenn2 [ a t ] uw.edu) and through the UW School of Medicine (Well-being and Support). Mental health resources for the AAPI community are also available through the Asian Mental Health Collective.
On behalf of the faculty of Genome Sciences
