Students who wish to arrange an external internship are welcome to do so with the permission of their dissertation advisor.

Please note the following guidelines:

-          You must have approval from your dissertation advisor.
-          Internships are only allowed after you have passed your general exam.
-          Internships generally should not last longer than one quarter.
-          Funding for that quarter will need to come from your internship (i.e. you’ll leave UW payroll while on your internship), unless you make other arrangements with your advisor.
-          Consider carefully whether interning is a good idea.  You will want to make sure there is a strong rationale for taking the time to intern.  Examples of good reasons are wanting to explore industry or even a specific company, wanting to learn a particular industry-specific skillset, etc.
-          While the exact timing and duration is between the student and their advisor, Summer Quarter is a particularly good time for internships, because you will have GAIP insurance regardless of student status (assuming you have had GAIP insurance for the previous Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters).

We would like to maintain a record of internships, so please let Brian know where you have interned.  If possible, please provide the company / organization’s contact info.
