Course Description:

Students benefit from a detailed understanding of the mechanisms of gene regulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It is important that students know how genetic information is kept silent when not needed and retrieved from genomes in response to various stimuli. Students will gain an understanding of prokaryotic and eukaryotic promoters, regulatory sequences, mechanisms of positive and negative regulation, nucleosome structure, chromatin modification and remodeling, and mechanisms of posttranscriptional regulation.

Class time will be a mix of lecture and discussion. Reading assignments will include historically important papers, current papers on emerging topics and reviews. Students are expected to have read the assignments in advance of class. Course grades will be determined by in class attendance, class participation, assignments, and a take-home assignment.
